The Catholic Multicultural Center is a great resource for those in need in Madison. They offer a food pantry, personal essentials, and free meals; ESL classes, employment search help, and food service training; immigration legal services; and community engagement programs like a chess club and an environmental justice program. It seems like a great spot to volunteer as well.
